Cellphone Based Internet Cafes

Lagos, Nigeria - Illiteracy - Cellphone Based Internet Cafes

One of the most effective ways to motivate people to learn to read is to give them access to the internet. The only question from there tends to become 'how do we fund that'?

Traditional internet cafes involve buying a bunch of computers and renting out a space for them. But by switching to using used smart-phones we have the ability to make internet cafes that are extremely cheap, and also mobile. All you need to be able to do is set up a wifi field.

Theoretically a vendor could travel and provide services to any area, including mobile ones like trains, and long distance buses.

The only problem is the potential for user-data exploitation. To protect communities struggling with illiteracy, infographics and other visual mediums would likely need to be employed.

It would likely only be a temporary problem anyways as internet cafes are already losing ground to the spread of smartphones.

Cellphone internet cafes are a good idea because the only thing cheaper than using a phone is sharing one.

The idea of a mobile cafe also sounds interesting.

Used cell phones that still work. Perhaps we could start some kind of fundraiser or drive, or partnership with someone that handles a lot of used phones.
