Instead of charging rent based on what it costs to provide shelter, people charge as much as they possibly can. Property based corporations buy up property, then make it scarcer, which makes it possible for them to charge more. So the idea that people could own property basically mutated into the idea that corporations could price gouge the public as hard as they possibly can, forever.
We need to do something about this. Automation is taking an increasing number of jobs, and in many places Portland's already become a scary place to live. And finally, what does it say about us, that we know human beings are being left to the potential of being stabbed or raped under a bridge somewhere, or simply freezing to death, and we didn't do everything we can? This is beyond religion and "ethics", it is a primordial question about who we are.
